Why regular converters fail on image-based PDFs

A converter reads the text, shapes, and images in a PDF and recreates them in PowerPoint. An image-based PDF has one image per page and nothing else, so the converter places that image on a slide and stops.

Some tools add OCR, which recognizes the words and lays a text layer over the image. But the original lettering is still baked into the picture. When you edit the new text, the old words show through underneath. Truly editable output needs three steps together: detect the text and its position, erase it from the image and fill the background, and rebuild text boxes with matching size and color.

Convert an image-based PDF with LingSlide

  1. Open the LingSlide app — no sign-up — and upload your PDF (up to 20 pages, 100 MB).
  2. Keep text reconstruction on. Optional 2× enhancement applies to the cleaned background, not the OCR input, and does not guarantee better text recognition.
  3. Wait while each page is rendered, recognized, cleaned, and rebuilt. Processing time depends on page count, image complexity, and service load.
  4. Compare original and rebuilt pages side by side and click any text to correct it.
  5. Download the new PPTX and keep editing in PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides. Your PDF is not modified.
What converts best: titles, paragraphs, bullet lists, and horizontal numbers. Small chart labels, vertical or curved text, decorative lettering, and low-contrast text are harder and may stay in the image.

Extra tips for scanned PDFs

  • Scan at 300 dpi or higher.
  • Straighten skewed pages before uploading.
  • Remove handwritten notes and stamps where possible — they get mistaken for text.
  • Split long documents and convert only the pages you need to edit.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some PDFs editable after conversion and others aren't?

It depends on whether the PDF contains text objects. PDFs exported from Word or PowerPoint do, so they convert cleanly. Scans, screenshot PDFs, and slide decks exported as images (for example from NotebookLM) don't, so converters can only place one picture per slide.

How can I tell if my PDF is image-based?

Press Ctrl/Cmd + F and search for a word you can see on the page, or try to highlight text. If nothing is found or selectable, the PDF is image-based.

Should I use LingSlide for text-based PDFs?

You can, but Acrobat, PowerPoint, or other standard converters are usually faster and more accurate for text-based PDFs because they read the existing text directly. LingSlide is built for image-based PDFs.

Is it free?

Each visitor can process 1 file per day for free, up to 20 pages and 100 MB, without an account. Project files are deleted automatically after about 7 days.
